Food waste is a concern for everyone in the world, and children are encouraged to enter a painting competition that addresses the issue.

The art competition is organised by Bayer AG and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and has the motto “Save the Planet – Save Food, Wasting Food is Wasting the Planet.”

The 23rd UN International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is open for children aged between six and 14 on June 5, 2014 (World Environment Day).

Each child may submit one painting, which must not have been entered in any other competition. Any materials can be used, and the pictures must be in DIN A4 or A3 format and labeled on the back with the participant’s first name, last name, gender, date of birth, address, telephone number and e-mail address.

The closing date for entries is 15 March, 2014.

Interested teachers and students could check out past entries by visiting the UNEP Painting Competition website here.

Prizes include US$2000 for the winner and a trip to the TUNZA International Children’s Conference 2014.

Entries should be sent to the Bayer New Zealand office in Auckland where they will be collated and forwarded onto the UNEP office in Bangkok, Thailand.
