Look beneath the surface

It’s time to get ready for Seaweek 2015.

Summer is the time to dive in to our marine environment, and each year our national Seaweek offers a chance to learn more about it.

‘Look beneath the surface – Papatai ō roto – Papatai ō raro’ is the theme for 2015, which encourages both children and adults to renew their connections with the sea. The official week will take place from Saturday February 28 to Sunday March 8, 2015.

As it proves every year, Seaweek is a period packed with a wide range of events, activities, competitions and educational opportunities.

The week is especially rich for teachers, with a range of activities, resources and competitions to bring to the classroom.

One such competition involves poetry. Entrants are asked to submit a 3-line haiku poem inspired by this year’s theme, and illustrate it with a photo. Both poem and photo can be posted to the Seaweek Facebook page along with the hashtag #Seaweek2015haiku.

Another is the nationwide ‘Seaweek Selfie’ challenge, where participants share their best ‘selfie’ exploring what it means to ‘look beneath the surface.’ This can also be posted to the Seaweek Facebook page, but with the hashtag #Seaweek2015YOE.

Find more information about the competitions here.

Visit this site for a full list of educational resources, including a collection by the Science Learning Hub.

There is also a Pinterest board for Seaweek educational activity ideas.
