Science teaching course wins award

Science course for practicing primary teachers boosts confidence.

Open Polytechnic lecturer Michael Fenton has won the DEANZ Award for his contribution to e-learning in New Zealand.

The educator received the award for his contribution to the inventive e-learning programmes developed by the Polytechnic. These courses are aimed at in-service primary educators wanting to boost their confidence in, and ability for, science teaching.

DEANZ (the New Zealand Association for Open, Flexible, and Distance Learning) named Mr Fenton the recipient of the award for 2014 during a dinner event at their bi-annual conference in May, 2014.

The DEANZ Award is designed to promote and reward excellence in e-learning, distance, open and flexible learning.

Mr Fenton says he is thrilled with his award win. “On behalf of the Open Polytechnic team, it’s wonderful to receive this recognition.”

The award citation from the DEANZ judges noted the e-learning materials for the primary science teaching courses were interesting and engaging for both the teachers in the courses, and their students in the primary classroom.
