New Zealand Science Teacher

Science Curriculum/Scientific Literacy

’Science Online’ a treasure for teachers

A new collection of online resources aims to encourage both primary and secondary science teachers.

Together with the New Zealand Council for Education Research (NZCER), the Ministry of Education has developed a new suite of resources called ‘Science Online’ to help teachers re-focus on the Nature of Science strand of the curriculum and weave in the key competencies for learning.

The Nature of Science is the overarching, unifying strand of the science curriculum. Through this strand, students learn what science is and how scientists work. They learn to think and behave like scientists. The other strands provide contexts through which students can develop their understanding about the nature of science.

The new set of resources has been developed in response to the findings of TIMSS (2010-11) and the ERO evaluation of science teaching and learning (2012), which showed a lack of student engagement in science across primary and secondary education.

The resources were made available online on November 26, 2013.
